Printed Matter's LA Art Book Fair 2014 is opening this Thursday evening, January 30th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm and continuing through the weekend:
Friday, January 31, 11 am - 5 pm
Saturday, February 1 and Sunday February 2, 11 am - 6 pm
MOCA Geffen Contemporary  |  152 N. Central Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90013

A fun guide on how to enjoying the book fair by Darin Klein on the Hammer's blog, here.

I'm also looking forward to getting some yummy eats in Little Tokyo nearby.

This year, Printed Matter will have new limited-edition artwork by Laura Owens, Jeremy Deller, Patrick Lee and Parra to benefit the Book Fair, ensuring that it remains a free event.

Here's an interview with Laura Owens about her exhibition last year, "12 Paintings" at 356 Mission. What an amazing space. It's an interesting watch. Photos from the show below:

I first became familiar with Laura's artwork at the Drawing Now: Eight Propositions exhibit at the New York MOMA. What a difference her work was then. No less amazing, just different. On Laura's site, is a visual catalog of her work. It's interesting to see the progression.

Crochet Art

My love for crochet art began with Clare Crespo's show of crochet food in 2000 at George's Gallery in Los Angeles. Clare is so inspiring on an insane amount of levels. More of her work is included below.

As a serial hobbyist, crochet is one of my favorite mediums! First taught to me by the talented Cal Patch when she had her shop in the LES, her lessons can be found online at Creative Bug. Here are some crochet artists that I've been inspired by recently. Like all Radder posts, links to their sites are clickable on their names. I have loads more of crochet inspiration on my Pinterest boards.

not crochet, but equally rad: Sarah's night sky space puddle:
Some of Sarah's recent work is currently on view at Little Lodge SF, a Gallery-Creative-Studio-Art Club House at 1306 12th Avenue at Irving Street in San Francisco.

I am a proud owner of a cupcake sculpture from Aaron Rose's Alleged Gallery and her cookbook, The Secret Life of Food. Crocheted food is only one sliver (like all of the artists included) of the amazingness that Clare does. See more of her projects: Hurray Today and Yummyfun Kooking.

For me, Ruth is by far one of the most inspiring contemporary artists – with an incredible history and artist/mother work ethic. Some great videos about Ruth here and here and larger images here. Many of the photos of Ruth and her family are by Imogene Cunnigham.

Also, this blog, is a treasure trove of crochet inspiration.

The Mothership by The Sacred Door & Dilettante

Opening this Thursday, January 16th and running through February is The Mothership Show, curated by The Sacred Door and Dilettante, and showing at the Dilettante in the Arts District LA.

"The Mothership" is a continuous concept by Carly Jo Morgan of The Sacred Door. Her work has been previously included here and here on The Radder. I first came to be familiar with her as Cavern, a boutique wallpaper design firm. But, it is her music, jewelry and artwork that transcends to another universe. She is an artist, jeweler, curator, birth doula, and soon-to-be mother. Her aesthetic explores the trans-dimensional psychedelic realm via mythical landscapes, color, humor, and uplifting New Age symbolism.

Dilettante is a collection of artists, writers, impresarios and managers. They are arbiters whose mission is to nurture talent, incubate brands and develop audiences. Rooted within music and artist management, they run an LA based, multi-disciplinary creative consultancy and arts space.

This exhibition brings together a beautiful span of artists together by Carly at the Dilettante space (click on each artist's name for a link to her site):

"The Mothership is a vessel that guides and carries smaller vessels, usually for the purpose of inquiry and exploration. It is a concept, which has been used in the artwork of Carly Jo Morgan as a symbol of the collective conscience form, which we, as individuals, draw creativity and inspiration from. The whole is greater than the sum of all its parts, and as we take direction from the source, we weave a web that operates as a unifying force for all. The "Mother" represents a specific feminine, maternal, intuitive energy. On January 16th, The Mothership calls a group of female artists to come together and form a unique matrix. The ideas and insight that spring from this matrix bring us balance, strength, and renewal."
